Knee Replacement Surgery in Chennai

Knee Replacement Surgery also known as Arthroplasty is a bone surgery that helps to ease the pain caused by severe arthritis and helps you to move more freely.
The Procedure
During the surgery, the orthopedic surgeon replaces the damaged part of the knee with an artificial joint made of metal or plastic. Then the artificial joint is attached to the thigh bone, kneecap and shin with a special material such as acrylic cement.

Good candidate for Knee Replacement Surgery
The main reason why people go for Knee Replacement Surgery is Osteoarthritis (the condition occurs when the cushion between the knee and bone joints break down). Knee Replacement Surgery benefits the following conditions also:
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: Rheumatoid Arthritis is a condition when the body's immune system attacks and destroys the lining of the knee.
  • Deformities: People with deformities like bowed legs or "known-knees" often get surgery to restore the position of the knee.
  • Knee Injuries: Broken bone or ligaments around the knee result in arthritis that causes pain and limits movement of the knee.
  • Loss of blood Flow: Doctors will recommend surgery for condition called either osteonecrosis or avascular necrosis (the condition causes when blood stops flowing to the bones).

Different types of Knee Replacement Surgery
The following are the four main types of knee replacement surgery:
  • Total Replacement Surgery: In this replacement surgery the surgeon replaces the surfaces of the thigh bone and shin bone that connects to the knee.
  • Partial Replacement Surgery: This surgery is done when arthritis affects only one side of the knee. For Partial replacement surgery the patient should have strong knee ligaments. It can be performed through a smaller cut than is needed in Total Replacement Surgery.
  • Knee Replacement Cap: This replacement surgery is done only on the surface of the kneecap.
  • Complex( or Revision) Knee Replacement: This procedure is needed if you have very severe arthritis or you have already done knee replacement surgeries.

A knee replacement surgery is usually suggested when other modes of treatment do not work to cure pain and stiffness in the knee that interfere with daily  activities of the person. They are done in cases of diseases like osteoarthritis and the sort.
Knee Replacement Procedure
The process of knee replacement surgery is done after the administration of anaesthesia. The area or parts of the knee joint which are damaged are then removed and the area is shaped to hold a prosthesis in its place.
The prosthesis used in knee replacement surgery are made of quality inert metals that do not react or cause harm to the adjoining tissues or bone. In older people, the prosthesis is joined cemented to the adjoining parts with a special substance. In younger people, they are not cemented, the bones are allowed to grow into them, holding them in place.
With the minimally invasive surgery being popular nowadays, knee replacement procedure has been simplified to a large extent. The knee surgery should be followed by physical therapy to ease the joints and to help them function properly. People can return to normal activity in a period of about 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the health of the patient.
Benefits of knee replacement surgery
The main advantages of getting a knee replacement surgery are as stated below
  • Relief from pain and stiffness
  • Increased mobility
  • The prosthesis can last for more than 20 years
  • Considerably short recovery period
Knee and Shoulder India is an advanced orthopaedic clinic, that deals with all issues of knee and shoulder joints and latest correction surgeries and treatment options.

Revision Knee Arthroplasty

Advancements in science and technology has increased the lifespan of artificial implants. Still, some of these artificial implants wear away, making the need for a second surgery. Revision knee arthroplasty is the process of performing a second knee replacement surgery by replacing failed prosthesis with new implants. Revision knee arthroplasty requires proper planning, sophisticated implants, new surgical techniques and therefore is time consuming.

Need for revision knee arthroplasty
  • Loosening of joint
  • Infection in joint
  •  Instability of implants
  • Damage to implants
  • Fracture of bone around joint

Types of revision implants
Cemented prosthesis and uncemented prosthesis are the two types of revision implants. Cemented prosthesis uses epoxy cement to attach the metal to the bone and uncemented prosthesis uses a mesh of holes which makes the bone grow into the mesh. In some cases both procedures are used based on the condition of the joint.

Surgical procedure of Knee Arthroplasty
Revision knee arthroplasty is a difficult procedure due to the bone loss around primary prosthesis. In order to overcome this problem the surgeon uses bone graft around artificial joint. After placing bone and other materials, new prosthesis is implanted. New artificial joints are only placed after making sure that the joint is infection free.
Like any other surgery, revision knee arthroplasty has also some complications like implant loosening, infection, wound complications, anesthesia complications etc.

After surgery
Special stocking and well padded dressings are provided to prevent blood clotting. Physical therapies are mandatory to improve the mobility of knees. Routine check ups are necessary to monitor the progress of recovery and to prevent further complications.

Knee and Shoulder India provides a complete solution for all your orthopedic issues with help of best joint replacement surgeon in India.
